Host's Old Jobs!

$

What were some of your favorite hosts doing BEFORE they came to QVC? They're sharing their stories and fabulous old job photos below!

Mary Beth Roe:

By the time I graduated college, I had an audition video ready to send out for a potential news job. Within two weeks, I was hired to be the first female evening news anchor in Eau Claire, WI. It was a great place for me to start and get my feet wet while really learning the business. That was 1981 when a lot of cities still only had male news anchors behind the desk. So it was rather groundbreaking back then. I was there 3 years and only left to get married to Mark.

Kerstin Lindquist:

I’ve had some pretty interesting jobs. One of my very first jobs, when I was 14, was a roller-skating snowflake during the Disney parade in Anaheim, CA where I had to wear a fabulous white leotard.  Next, I was a lifeguard. I absolutely loved it. I made some of my best friends and got to be out in the sun all day and get paid for it. I was also a news broadcaster for 8 years, working on everything from undercover work in Mexico to investigative reporting from Guantanamo Bay. I even won 4 Emmys! But the funniest old job story of all? I replaced Rachel Boesing as the weather girl in Las Vegas!

Shawn Killinger:

This is me in 1997. I worked for CBS News. I was an Assistant on the Foreign News desk. To this day I consider working in that newsroom, the Dan Rather one, the greatest accomplishment of my life.  I was a low level, starter out-ter. I faxed, answered phones, prepared passport apps for our Foreign correspondents. I was gifted at ordering lunch.

Leah Williams: (sorry do not have original picture)

Fast asleep and still in my uniform after a long day making burgers at Jack In The Box circa 1978.

Jacque Gonzales:

I really need to sit down and write about my almost 19 years in radio (I started when I was 14) - and some of the best friends and mentors I've ever had! I'm going to start digging through my old photos too! But this photo I thought would be fun for some of you to guess who he is?!?!? Without radio - I wouldn't have ended up at QVC - I'm eternally grateful - and will ALWAYS be a Radio Girl at heart!!! Oh, and this is Slick Rick.

Dan Wheeler: Here are two old photos from my first job in radio.  When I was 19 years old I worked a summer job as a disc jockey at WWOG-FM radio station in Boca Raton, Florida.  The station was located in the middle if what seemed to be "a jungle."  I had to sign the station on the air at 6am - meaning I arrived at 4:30AM. It was a little scary showing up there in the dark.  One morning I was putting my key in the door and I heard a hissing sound.  I looked up and a water moccasin snake was about two inches from my face!  It had slithered up a bush and was wrapped around the light fixture above the door.  I was able to get a long stick and put that snake back into the jungle. But what a way to start your day! Oh, and it was all for $1.60 an hour!

Jennifer Coffey:

Before QVC I owned four clothing boutiques in Texas! This was my first, in a 160-year old building in New Braunfels.

Sharon Faetsch:

My first job when I moved to Vegas in ’97 was as a magician’s assistant. One of my illusions was to be stabbed with swords in a sword basket, and come out wearing a different costume. I can’t give away any secrets, but I spent a lot of money on skin-colored tights that year! :)

What was your very first job? Tell us in the comments below!

Ellen Dishes on Decorating Tips, Inspirations, and QVC!

Ellen DeGeneres is well-known as a beloved television host, but now she wants to come into your home in a different way—through her new collection of home goods, ED On-Air by Ellen DeGeneres. Her whimsical, stylish products are sure to give your décor a touch of something special. And because she’s got a real knack for decorating and entertaining, it only made sense to pick her brain on those very subjects!

Anne Creedon: What’s the inspiration for ED On-Air for this spring?

Ellen DeGeneres: Spring itself! In spring, people start moving outside—and I think the outdoors are as important as the indoors. If you’re going to spend time outside, why not make it beautiful? Why not make that an extension of your living space? You want outdoor pillows, candles for dining or entertaining, and beautiful furniture and accessories that are durable and will withstand the elements. You want things that can actually live outside—which is where you should live in the spring.

AC: What’s your favorite thing about spring?

ED: Spending more time outside. That and changing the décor inside a tiny bit. You might want to change a lampshade, tablecloth, or dishware. There’s nothing wrong with being springy!

AC: What do you think is the most important home decorating tip you could give our customers?

ED: Make it your own. Don’t try to copy what somebody else does because you see it in a magazine. It has to be comfortable and livable. Decorate for your lifestyle. And I love eclectic décor. I think that as long as things are beautiful, you can mix them together and it works. If it’s your style, it works.

AC: Neutral or colorful décor?

ED: Personally, I’m a neutral gal, but I also like to add color for a bit of flair. If it’s all neutral, it can become bland. I think you have to add a little bit of color to add some warmth.

AC: When did you first become interested in design?

ED: I think I’ve been interested in design since I was a little girl. My mother sold real estate for a while and I used to look at houses with her. I would see how different people decorated their homes, so I was constantly drawn to different people’s aesthetics and what they chose.

AC: What motivated you to launch a lifestyle brand?

ED: People would walk into my house and say, “I love that,” or “Where did you get that?” and so I wanted to share my ideas with everybody. It was always a passion of mine to create a beautiful environment in my home and work atmosphere because I like to be surrounded by things that inspire me. So my collection is for people who want beautiful, high-quality things that are affordable.

AC: Is there a story behind the name of your collection – ED On-Air?

ED: ED is my nickname and it’s very personal to me because only people who really know me call me that. And now that I’m sharing my design aesthetic with the world, it’s a personal relationship—so everyone gets to call me ED now!

AC: Do you have any favorite products in your line?

ED: That’s like picking my favorite pet! I can’t pick my favorite product. I wouldn’t put anything out there that I don’t love, so I can’t really choose.

AC: What do you like most about selling your products on QVC?

ED: That I get feedback immediately. When customers call in and say what they like about an item or why they’re interested in buying it, that’s the direct relationship I’m excited about. That’s why I started in standup—because I get to have that immediate feedback, that immediate relationship with people.

AC: How do you feel about the live aspect of being on QVC?

ED: Live is always better. You don’t know what’s going to happen and that’s the beauty of it!

Meet Toi Sweeney!

Ever wonder who makes QVC’s hosts and on-air guests look stylish and put together? It’s Toi Sweeney! With more than a decade of experience, Toi is an authority on personal styling. She knows what looks good, what doesn’t, and how to match clothes with personality. A longtime QVC employee, she worked her way up the ranks and now gets to call shopping with all 26 QVC program hosts part of the job.

Ashley Hartle: Tell me about your career and how you became a fashion stylist.

Toi Sweeney: I came to QVC 15 years ago with a Fashion Marketing degree and started in the Merchandising department. It was not the job for me—I was really bad at it. I had decided to go back to school for my Fashion Design degree when one of my friends said, “There’s an opening for a fashion stylist!” I didn’t even know QVC had fashion stylists! So I got the job and began freelancing while I attended school. After graduation, I started a couture evening-wear line that was sold in a boutique outside Philadelphia. Host Jane Treacy was my first customer—she bought a dress to wear on air for QVC PresentsFFANY Shoes on Sale”!

Shortly after that I was featured on the cover of the business section of the Philadelphia Inquirer. Then when Philadelphia Magazine launched, I was their first feature design story under “What’s Hot Now.” It was around that time that I began working in the booking office at QVC, meeting vendors and suggesting models to help sell their product. I later became a full-time fashion stylist, then got promoted to the job I have now, where I primarily work with hosts and guests.

AH: What’s your typical work day like?

TS: It varies. On Thursdays I sit down with guests new to QVC and give them a style consultation—sort of the dos and don’ts on air. I may go shopping in the morning from around 10am until 2pm and then come back to the office, or I may leave and go to a host’s home and do a closet edit for a few hours. It’s different every day and I love it. Hands down, I have the best job in the world!

AH: It sounds so exciting! Where do you find inspiration?

TS: Everywhere! One of the things you learn in school is how to pull inspiration from things around you. If I’m looking at the white chair you’re sitting in, I’m thinking about how white has been trending the past few seasons, and how the chair is textured and perforated. I think about the brands that are doing that, and then my mind goes to which host that look would work on. My mind never stops!

AH: How would you describe your personal style?

TS: Creative, dramatic, and elegant.

AH: If you could trade closets with anyone, who would it be and why?

TS: Oh, that’s tough! I’d have to say no one. I think style is so personal that it’s like saying I would trade lives with someone, and I’m all about the journey. If you trade style then it changes everything.

AH: Let’s say I can only buy one new item for spring. What should it be?

TS: Gosh, can it be two new things?

AH: Go for it!

TS: I would say a magnificent handbag and a great pair of really comfortable shoes. If your accessories are of great quality, then people will assume the rest of your outfit is, too. So you can wear an inexpensive T-shirt, but if you’re carrying your great Dooney & Bourke bag and wearing your Marc Fisher sandals, no one is going to question the other items you have on.

AH: So tell me, what do you like to do when you’re not busy making hosts and guests look super stylish?

TS: I love spending time with my son, Tucker, who’s five and my husband, John, of 14 years. We think we have the most beautiful child in the world, but I guess we are supposed to think that!

AH: One last question: What styling advice would you give other women?

TS: Fashion is dead and everything is about personal style. It’s all about the relationships you’re building with others, but also the one you’re building with yourself. So you have to be comfortable, but not to the point that you’re sloppy. You have to just be yourself in small ways and in big ways. I should be able to look at you and know who you are instantly. It shouldn’t be a guess.

P.S. My official QVC Facbook Page will go live on Wednesday, April 8th.  So be on the look out for that!   AND my first on-air date will be with the amazing Jane Treacy during a 2hr Discover Diamonique Show at 4pm ET on Monday, April 13th.  Hope you all can join me!

Take a look at the past couple of weeks as I have reconnected with so many of the amazing Hosts and Vendors from my QVC Family!

{Mary Beth and I...She was my mentor when I began at QVC 20 years ago and she is my mentor again this time!}

"Don’t you just love seeing a long lost friend you haven’t seen in a long time?  That’s why I’m so glad Lisa Mason is back as a QVC host!  After a decade and a half of shopping with Lisa, falling in love with her sweet southern accent and her charming sense of humor, she wanted to branch out and try other things.  We all understood, so she moved on about 5 years ago.  She wrote a book, dabbled in real estate, did infomercials and was even a guest on QVC with Supersmile (one of my favorite products), and now we needed her back!

It’s like riding a bike…you never forget how.  She will jump right in and take you shopping, and I’m sure you will enjoy her, laugh with her laugh, and fall in love with her, “Sugar”…”you sweet thing”…  But also know that she knows her stuff.  She knows the products inside and out, and she especially excels with jewelry, beauty, fashions, accessories as well as home goods.  Cooking?  I’ll find out from Gino, her husband!  Welcome back, Lisa!" -Mary Beth Roe, Program Host

{Carloyn, me and Dan

{Sandra, Jayne, me, Lori Pickford and Amy Scaglionne}

"I haven’t been called ‘Sugar’ in a long time so you know I couldn't wait to give Lisa Mason a big hug and hear her call me her favorite term of endearment! Seriously, I have always had a lot of respect for Lisa and I’ve so enjoyed our friendship over the years. We were texting and talking on the phone back when she first decided to come back, but a couple of weeks ago, a couple of us got together to have dinner with Lisa. We wanted to welcome her in person. It was like she never had left! We laughed, we shed a few tears, and we gave thanks that her journey has brought her back to our team. Lisa’s life has been changed quite a bit since she hosted her last show here. However, as you would expect from Lisa, she is returning even stronger and more grateful for life’s blessings. I’m so thrilled she has returned!” -Sandra Bennett, Program Host

"My dear friend Lisa Mason is back at the "Q" as a Program Host!!  A few friends got together to welcome her home and catch up on all the things happening in her life.  Join me in welcoming out little "sugar" (said with a southern accent)! -Jayne Brown, Program Host

Scott Brothers' Home Style Advice

$

Recently, we asked you to submit photos of the areas of their homes that they needed help updating. Drew and Jonathan Scott are here to respond to 5 photographs and give their tips for these spaces!

living room

It's important to let in natural light- it'll help any space feel brighter and bigger. A white sheer or shade that can diffuse light but not block it is best for your windows. It's also great to have some elegant or traditional pieces incorporated but be careful not to over do it. Here, we see too many different styles forced together and they're all fighting for attention! It's kinda like when brothers compete haha. Instead, create a focal point like a feature wall and have the rest of the room complement it. A fireplace is typically a nice feature so don't hide it with that chair!

living room

Less is more. If this wall is where your TV has to stay, focus on bringing balance and symmetry to this wall so that it doesn't look so cluttered.
Put away the toys! Consider a coffee table or ottoman that doubles as storage so you can tuck away toys but have them easily accessible. Your window panels shouldn't fully block the windows so consider faux wood blinds (cost effective) and leave the panels as decor to the side of your window. If you really want wow factor consider adding an electric fireplace and wall-mount your TV above it. Electric units these days can look exactly like the real thing. Be sure to build it into the wall and even add a beautiful tile surround for added value.

photo of the front of a fan's house

Curb appeal: You need some wow factor for your home! Painting your front door and garage doors a slightly bolder color can make the curb appeal pop. Even a darker tone in the same color palette is nice if your trim is white or black! Consider continuing your garden the length of your driveway to help create an inviting entry! You NEED some color in your life!! Flowers, shrubs and even some path lighting could give you the dramatic front scape you need. Check out our Scott Living collection at QVC.comfor some furniture and decor that'll help your outdoor space shine.

Staircase in a home

Defining a space: Throwing two chairs in a room doesn't exactly define a space. Is this a living room? A dining room? Especially when selling, it's important to establish what the function of the space will be so potential buyers can easily imagine themselves in that space. It's okay to use an area rug on carpet as it can help add color of pattern to a room. If it's in the budget, there's nothing better than flowing hardwood through your main floor! The blue and red paint is fairly dark so I would recommend using a little color like a soft gray..and punch up the color and personality in your artwork and decor.
If this happens to be your front entry you could also create separation with some freestanding open shelves for storage that sit below counter height.

a fan's kitchen

Fresh and New: You've fallen into the beige and brown trap! This kitchen feels tired. If you don't have a huge budget to renovate your kitchen, that's fine. Spend money where it counts here: Cabinets, lighting and walls. Simply painting the cabinets white will make this kitchen feel fresh and newer. Along with a lighter tone on the walls the space will actually feel twice the size. Lighting is crucial in any small area. Replace that fixture with recessed lights or at least a newer fixer that can offer some better disbursement of light. If your budget is a little higher, consider new hardware, fixtures, counters and floors. Plus, a backsplash is not only functional but it can be that feature in your kitchen that everyone talks about.

What's Your Proudest Mom Moment?

In honor of Mother's Day, some of your favorite hosts are sharing their proudest "mom moments!"

Nancy Hornback

This note came from Isabella's kindergarten teacher this past October. It made me SO proud to be her mom!

"Good morning! I just wanted to write a quick email and let you know that Isabella has been a wonderful friend today.  We got a new student in our class this morning and she sits next to Isabella.  She has been very helpful showing her where everything goes, helping her find her cubby, and pencil box.  Be proud, not many kids would take it upon themselves to do that."  A proud moment for me, indeed!"

Alberti Popaj

“I’m proud of my mother for her inner beauty, her strong faith, and her ability to always face the world with a smile.”

Jennifer Coffey

My proudest moment as a mom is any time my Gabby chases a dream...and she does that quite often! She'll get it in her head that she wants something, and I know it's already a lock when she declares it's in her sights. One day we drove past a karate studio and Gabby said "I'd like to get good at that." Next thing I know she's a brown belt! She declared that she wanted to give modeling a try, and next thing I know she's doing a runway show for girls' formals. She thought running for student council was a good idea, and became treasurer of her class. She isn't just my pride and joy, she my dream-chasing role model!

Kerstin Lindquist

Anytime one of my girls does something compassionate for the other or reminds me about Jesus' love, I just melt with pride. I love that they are growing up as little girls of faith.

Amy Stran

I know there will be so many proud moments in the future, but for right now I think my proudest moment as a mother so far is giving birth to Bree. I just can’t seem to wrap my finger around the idea that Bree is here because of us!

Jacque Gonzales

Theresa is my biggest Blessing! Her sincere compassion for people, animals and nature is beautiful. Theresa's faith is so deep and pure. She took every step of her journey for her First Holy Communion with an open heart and excitement. To see my baby growing up so fast is amazing - I'm so proud of all that she has accomplished - and love her with all of my heart!!! She's my little "Mini Me"! I'm Mama Wolf and she's Baby Wolf! We even howl at each other!  (Poor Daddy!)

Sandra Bennett

My proudest moment as a mother is every time I see my daughters being kind to each other. They love each other very much and it shows. I try to teach them that “family is first.” It’s easy to be nice and polite to a classmate, friend, or even a stranger and save your nastiest behavior for home. I remind them that they need to treat each other with that same kindness they give others. They sometimes fight, but they are rarely mean to each other. Of course, they are still young. So far, so good!

Sharon Faetsch

When both of my children and I first received our new color belts in Tae Kwon Do.  We all had to train hard to achieve it!

Jill Bauer

My proudest moments as a mom are when Kylie and Trevor are complimented by teachers and coaches for being respectful, kind and for being pleasures to have in the classroom or on a team.

Mary Beth Roe

Mark and I are certainly proud of all 4 of our children, but if I had to pick one as my proudest mom moment, I would have to say it was when our son, Eric, was given the award of "Most Coachable Player" at his high school tennis banquet. It was given to the player most able to take feedback with a positive attitude and then take the feedback and apply it to his game. That was the best award one of my kids could ever get in my mind, since to me, it's not about winning, it's about the respect you give the coach and the humility it takes to take criticism and turn it into a positive thing.

I cherish every moment. The bond with your child begins as soon as that baby is in your arms.

My mom is a humanist, feminist, civil rights activist, and all around compassionate, caring, amazing woman. She has spent her life giving voice to those who need to be heard. I am proud of every moment she is on the planet.

My mom’s prayers and her advice have made me who I am. I know and greatly appreciate the sacrifices that she made for me and my sisters.

Honestly my proudest mom moment is every day.  To see my boys try, thrive and love.  I know it might sound silly but it's the truth.
